Like a Family
CaringWorks client Rudene A. doesn’t let her difficult past get in the way of her positive outlook. Even during one of the most challenging periods of her life when she was living on the streets of Wilmington, North Carolina, Rudene felt a sense of comfort that things would get better.
Thanks to a friend who encouraged her to move to Atlanta and find resources for people experiencing homelessness, Rudene was eventually connected with CaringWorks and she now lives in her own apartment.
“It’s hard living on the street, but someone was there looking out for me,” she said. “God had not thrown me away.”
Rudene says that in addition to having stable housing, the people of CaringWorks who check on her and help her get the support she needs makes a huge impact. Without having much contact with her family, this is even more meaningful.
“I’ve had good managers who have been helping me,” she said. “They help relieve the burden off my heart. It makes it feel like a family, like someone really cares for me.”
Having stability also allows Rudene to focus on goals for her future. She is currently exploring opportunities to take college classes, which some schools offer tuition-free for older adults.
“I could take classes online,” she said. “I don’t want to be idle. I want something to focus on.”
When Rudene reflects back to when she was homeless, she knows it’s a reality that anyone could face, and she’s grateful for the people who helped her overcome it.
“It’s been a blessing to have people who have responded,” she said. “Anyone can fall on hard times. There are people out there who are willing to help, and there are people out there who have the best spirit. They really want to help you get out of the situation to move on to somewhere better.”
